Affiliate Marketing with a Website

Chapter 9- Joining Affiliate Programs & Networks

Now that you have a website with some content, you are ready to start Joining Affiliate Marketing Programs and Networks for your Affiliate Marketing Business. In this chapter we are going to cover some important things that you need to know about Joining Affiliate Marketing Programs and Networks for your affiliate marketing business website.

If you were wondering why we talked about writing content before we showed you how to join affiliate programs, that's because there is a secret to applying for affiliate programs. Here's the secret:

Affiliate Programs that will approve you without reviewing your website are typically not programs you actually want to be a part of.

What do we mean by that? Well there are A LOT of affiliate marketing programs out there, but MOST are not worth your time to join. Either their product doesn't move, their program markets spamware/spyware, or any other number of problems. Let's take a step back... Now, imagine that you own a successful business that sells widgets and you want to increase the brand recognition for your product, or you just want to increase traffic to your website. You know that you have a great product, you just need people to see your sales pitch and they will be convinced. So you decide to use Affiliate Marketing to help spread the word about your company. Would you honestly be ok with just letting anyone promote your site? What about pornographic websites? What about sites set up by hackers to steal people's information? What about the homepage for a hate group? Would you want your brand for your company that you have worked so hard to build to be represented by those sites? Would you want your potential customers to associate your products with hackers and bigots? Probably not. So any company that values their reputation will implement some form of screening to determine who should and should not be able to market their products.

That's why we say that any program that will approve you without reviewing your website is probably not someone you want to be doing business with. They usually have a reason for allowing ANYONE to market their product/service, and you shouldn't stick around to find out why. Imagine if your grandmother made a purchase through your website to help support your growing affiliate marketing business, and then next thing you know she has her identity stolen... doesn't sound like a good scenario to us.

Fortunately, there is a simple solution to avoid all of that drama and that super akward conversation come Thanksgiving... only join reputable and well-established affiliate marketing programs and networks.

Here's the Problem

There is one problem with working with reputable and well-established affiliate marketing programs and networks, and that is the fact that they are NOT easy to get approved. There is a full application process in order to join the better affiliate marketing programs and networks, and that application process involves having a website that they can review.

Some affiliate marketing programs won't approve your application until your website is ranked and generating traffic. So, now you can see why we recommended that you create your page's content before you start applying to affiliate programs.

Now, if you decided to skip the content section and jumped ahead to this page, then now would be a good time to head back to Chapter 8: Publishing Content.

Let's Start Applying!

Alright the moment you have been waiting for is finally here, it's time to start applying to Affiliate Marketing Programs and Networks.

Affiliate Programs vs Networks- What's The Difference?

AnAffilaite Marketing Program is a program set up through an individual company to promote their product or service. You will apply through the company directly (or the third party that they send you to) and will have your sales tracked by this company seperate from all other affiliate programs you join. The company will have a minimum dollar amount before they will issue a payment (usually $50 - $100).

What is a 2nd Tier Affiliate Program? There are many affiliate programs that you can join that will not only pay you for sending them customer, but they will also pay you for getting other people to sign up as affiliates. Commissions are either a flat fee per new affiliate that signs up via your link, or even better, some programs allow you to have Sub Affiliates, and you will make a small percentage from affiliate sales that they generate. So for example, A2 Hosting, has an affiliate program that will pay us if you purchase one of their hosting platforms. Additionally, they have a second tier that will pay us a small commission if you join as an affiliate using our link and then get some of your visitors to purchase hosting services.

An Affiliate Network acts as an intermediary between publishers (affiliates) and merchant affiliate programs. It allows website publishers to more easily find and participate in affiliate programs which are suitable for their website (and thus generate income from those programs), and allows websites offering affiliate programs (typically online merchants) to reach a larger audience by promoting their affiliate programs to all of the publishers participating in the affiliate network. The big perk to working with an network is that you have access to several companies that you can promote, and all of your commissions work toward one minimum payout amount (still around $100), which means you get paid faster, and more often.
